NPP primaries: Kennedy Agyapong accepts defeat, calls for unity

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has accepted the outcome of the party’s presidential primary, stating that he was mentally prepared for either victory or defeat.

Provisional results indicate that former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is leading the race with over 55% of the votes cast.

Mr Agyapong is trailing alongside three other contenders, Dr Bryan Acheampong, Dr Yaw Adutwum, and Kwabena Agyepong.

Addressing journalists on Saturday, January 31, Mr Agyapong described himself as a seasoned politician who understands the realities of electoral contests.

“I am a veteran politician, so I know. I have gone through several defeats, so I cushioned myself and expected the worst, and the worst has happened. But the worst doesn’t mean that is the end of life,” he said.

He urged his supporters to remain hopeful and accept the decision of the delegates, noting that the future remains uncertain.

“So keep faith alive and be happy with the outcome. Who knows what will happen tomorrow? The delegates have spoken, and we have to take it. We don’t know what is in store for us tomorrow,” he added.

Mr Agyapong expressed gratitude to his campaign team, popularly known as Team Ken, for their dedication throughout the contest and encouraged them to stay positive despite the outcome.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank Team Ken for the wonderful work you’ve done. We all admit we worked hard, but God’s time is the best. He knows what is good for us. I know most of you are dejected; you have to keep your spirit up because once we have life, we have everything,” he stated.

He further stressed that losses are part of political life, adding that he had taken the outcome in good faith.

Calling for unity within the NPP, Mr Agyapong cautioned his supporters against making divisive remarks that could harm the party’s cohesion.

He pledged to formally appreciate the efforts of his campaign team at a later date.

“Especially Team Ken, the good works that you’ve done, I want to show my appreciation, and at an appropriate time we will meet and dine together,” he said.
